My recent unique training methods have proven amazing for rehabilitation from surgery.

The Bowen and Emmett Techniques are proving to be very successful within a short amount of time. This client saw great improvement on his second visit.

Al’s Rehab Success Story

Al fell on the ice in mid February and had a complex break in his left arm above and below the elbow. Two days after the break he had plates and screws put in to hold the bones in place for healing.

His arm was in a splint for 2 weeks. He was also using a sling most of the time for a month and then for protection for about 2 months. With this amount of restricted use, his shoulder began to lock up.

After the splint was removed he began going to physical therapy to increase range of motion. He was going twice a week to work on the shoulder and wrist muscles and continued for 8 weeks. During this 8 week stretch he was also doing assisted stretches at home with the help of his wife 2-3 times a day, with very little improvement.

When Al came in for his first visit for this issue in June he showed me how much of a struggle it was to get his hand towards his face and statedalbefore-320x270 that this was what he was working on with stretches throughout the day. We did a full body assessment and a basic Bowen treatment (as is the general protocol) plus some work on the problem shoulder and arm.

We saw some improvement in the shoulder range of motion but we still had a long way to go.

Visit number 2 was about 2 weeks later and this was the amazing turning point!

Reassessment showed that the shoulder had tightened back up again and the ROM was again very restricted.

With the second treatment I did more detailed work on the shoulder and found that the pectoral muscles were very bound up.

These muscles had been held in one position with very minimal movement for quite some time from wearing the sling. When this happens, the muscles tend to shut down or atrophy.

Stretching and exercise can take years to correct this issue and often it does not work at all.

Getting the blood flow back into the muscles is the quickest, most effective way to get those muscles functioning again. This is what soft tissue bodywork (The Bowen and Emmett techniques) addresses.

The treatment session lasted less than an hour with about 5 to 10 minutes spent on the problem shoulder before I felt it release.

I asked Al to see if he could reach his nose then. He could not only reach his nose but he could cross his arm over and reach the opposite ear. He could also bring his arm to the back of his head.

alafter-320x270The smile on his face was priceless!

His wife happened to be waiting in the other room so we called her in. The first word out of her mouth was a jaw dropping “WOW”. I felt the same way!

Visit 3 showed a minimal decrease in ROM but that was quickly improved with a similar treatment session.

Upon last check on at the end of July Al’s shoulder ROM has held up!

He still has a ways to go with the hardware in his elbow, but I’m pretty sure that once they get that figured out, I will be seeing him again!
